Massa Marittima
It was the most important city in the Maremma of the XVIIth century and was originally named Massa. The name of Maremma Massa or Massa Marittima was introduced to distinguish it from Massa in the province of Massa Carrara. Our Resort is only 30 minutes drive from Massa Marittima, a town of art built around the tenth century, after the decline of Populonia old, who was too exposed to the plundering by sea. She was known for its mines of copper and silver in the times of the Etruscans and the rich variety of available metals was an important factor in the economic development of the city. The turnout at Massa Marittima was apparently due to the strict medieval urbanization and the concentration of public buildings (buildings) around the Duomo.
The main square, the spectacular Piazza Garibaldi, one of the most beautiful squares in Tuscany seat of the Bishop's Palace (seat of the Bishop), Praetorian Palace (now an interesting museum), Palazzo Comunale, the Town Mint, Source of Public Building and abundance (the public granary). Those who enjoy holidays in nature, as their stay in Tuscany, can not 'appreciate that a visit to a town that today still retains the charm of a bygone time.
The Cathedral is an example of the Pisan-Romanesque with beautiful carvings of the Madonna delle Grazie, attributed to Duccio (1316) and the area of San Cerbone, a masterpiece of the Sienese school, dated ca. 1324. A sarcophagus dating from the fourth century is located in the Cathedral and San Cerbone (who died in 380) is buried in the crypt.
A memorable and much easier to see the Palio in Siena is the Traditional Archery Girifalco, every last Sunday of May and every second Sunday in August. Here the three terzieri Mass (old town and new town outside the village) will challenge for the win with weapons of war and fascinating ancient crossbows.
The nearby hills are rich in metalliferous ores and were the focus of the industrial revolution in the area, but in the late nineteenth century this industry was already in decline and now these mountains are just memories of a glorious past loss. The old mines and factories now in ruins, presenting a picture surreal, hidden in forests and full of old mining ruins. There are two museums in Massa Marittima mining activity: the museum of art and history of mining in Piazza Matteotti and the mining museum in via Corridoni (both open from April to September) with exhibits dating from the Bronze Age and stone. In our farmhouse near Mass Maritime we will give you the best directions to visit this jewel of Tuscany
